Flat towing 2009 VW New Beetle 5 Speed on Blue Ox System

Post by Wylie »

I have set up my 2009 VW Beetle with the Blue Ox System & Base Plate. Will my 2005 24 RB tow it & keep the battery in the VW charged? I’m told the key needs to be in so the steering wheel doesn’t lock, but won’t that drain the VW battery? Anyone towing a VW Beetle 5 speed? Thanks!

Yes having the key in the ignition ACC position to unlock your steering will cause a drain on your VW’s battery. Recommend that you have a mechanic remove the steering lock pin from your steering wheel column so that you don’t even have to have the key in the ignition to tow. That is what I had done to my 2016 VW GTI and has worked well for me.
