2019 Banning/Palm Springs Area Rally Recap - Oct 28-Nov 1

Post by bfadmin »

                                                                                                  2019 Banning/Palm Springs Area Rally
                                                                   October 28 – November 1, 2019

This rally was held at the Banning Stagecoach KOA, a very nice RV park with a number of surrounding attractions. It was attended by sixteen club members arriving in nine coaches from five states. It was scheduled for late Fall to escape the heat. But, we experienced high winds and red-flag fire warnings. Nevertheless, we persevered and had fun.

We had our traditional heavy appetizer potluck for our first night in our rally room and all were welcomed by hosts Jim and Phyllis Howard and co-hosts Ken and Beth Giannotti.

Each morning we enjoyed a light coffeecake breakfast, except for a surprise full pancake-and-bacon breakfast hosted and prepared for us by attendees Rich and Wendy Schwerin. They also gave us inscribed pens. They are marvels.

Our first full day we carpooled to Redlands for a tour of the Halloween-decorated Victorian mansion, the Kimberly Crest Mansion and Garden, previously owned by one of the founders of the Kimberly-Clark Paper Company . Afterwards, some attendees stayed on in Redlands for a local lunch.

That night, after a macaroni and cheese/salad dinner, the Giannottis took over the entertainment with their inventive games that always are a highlight of Southwest Region rallies.

On our second day, we carpooled to Riley’s Farm in Oak Glen (Southern California’s apple country) and we found we were delightfully free of the winds at this high elevation. All had a hilarious time trying their hand at archery and hatchet throwing, as well as crammed together on the hayride. Lunch was at the farm’s Hawk’s Head Tavern, where we were served by staff attired in 1770’s attire and speaking 1770’s accents (or their idea of it).

Our last day was Halloween. “Witch” Phyllis Howard greeted everyone for breakfast. In the afternoon we went to the Native American Malki Museum in Banning, and then to dinner in the coffee shop at the Morongo Casino where we were seated together for our last communal chat.
