I'm just purchased a '97 BF BFT. I has a bad starter on the Onan 4000 Genset generator. I'm not really sure how to drop the generator. It looks like it unbolts and swings down. Are there any DIY links for this on the forum?

Hi Scott. The generator not turning over could be from a variety of issues not related to the starter. What leads you to think it's the starter?

Scott,

For instructions on how to lower your Onan Generator, go to the Technical Library section on this forum and click on the topic titled Lowering Onan BGE Series Emerald Plus Generators in your B/F

The starter spins but does not engage the motor. Either the starter is sticking or a bad solenoid. It ran fine when I inspected the rv to purchase it. After I bought it, the first time I tried to start it this happened lol.

Isn't that the way it always happens? Good luck!

Thanks for the help. Took 1 1/2 hrs to replace the starter. Saved me a big bill from the rv center which was telling me it was a 6 hr job at 100.00 / hr.

Well done! Yep... there's no doubt that Cummins/Onan is expensive... actually the one nearest me, in Cedar Rapids, has a $135/hr shop charge for Onan work. I think it's only $115 for Cummins!
