Gas assisted shock on front entry Door

Post by stevek »

http://www.pplmotorhomes.com/parts/rv-l ... -shock.htm

Has anybody installed a gas assisted door shock to their front door of their BF.

I went to a local RV Show and saw a few New Class C with these installed.
They seems to work pretty good.
Rather than the front door swinging freely and opened at an 180, they would opened the door at 90 degrees and lock in place.

I can not envision how this would be installed on a Born Free with the screen door arrangement we have.

I believe I saw something like that on a 2014 Born free. The door did not open flat against the body and was being held open at a 90 degree angle to the body. Not sure what they were using to accomplish that.

The 2015 models have a strut at the bottom of the door. Here's a shot I took at the rally. It doesn't show the strut very well.

Several of the ladies (and a few men) were talking about this at the Homecoming because the new ones were like this.....none of us liked this. We did find out, I believe, that they could still make it do 180 and add the latch on the coach. Am interested why you think the 90 Degree door is a good thing?

My 2002 BF 26' RSB coach came with a latch to hold the entry door open in the 180 degree position. That prevents my door from freely slamming open and closed in the wind. My coach also came equipped with a seperate fiberglass door step that makes entry & exit just as easy as coaches equipped with fold out door steps.

The 90 degree door on the 2014 and 2015 models is necessary due to the design of the new windows. If the window adjacent to the door is open the door swinging 180 degrees would probably break it if it hit it with sufficient force. You can put the old style catch on the door and coach but you will have to remember to keep that window closed. In addition the strut is designed to break if too much force is applied to it so it is probably a good idea to have a spare in the coach. It can be installed or removed without the use of tools other than your hand.

Sam - Are you setting up the ground work for some kind of law suit if you drink to much and break your hip?

To me the advantage would be...
If you are not completely level, door can swing open, slip out of your fingers.
If it is windy, door can blow out of your hand.
Both ways... door bangs against coach wall.
The strut would eliminate both of these.

Regarding the step.... BF should have a built in step.
Manual or electric would be OK.
That portable step is a pain
Most high end Class C have a built in step.
BF should too..
