For those interested in fuel economy of a Born Free, I just completed a 3467 mile roundtrip from Iowa out to Las Vegas, NV then to Mesa, AZ and back home. I have a 2002 Born Free 26' RSB coach with a 305 HP V10 gas engine on a E450 chassis and I tow a 3400 lb car behind it. The trip was via I-80, I-76, I-70 and I15 to Las Vegas. This route involved some high altitude driving including several summits in the Colorado Rockies exceeding 10,000 ft altitude. The return trip from Mesa back home was via I-40, highway 54, highway 81, and I-80.
I drive mostly a speed of 63 mph. My fuel economy average for the complete trip was 8.69 mpg and this calculation includes correcting for about a 1% odometer error in the Ford E450 chassis. By the way, it was no problem towing the 3400 lb car up and over those summits exceeding 10,000 ft in altitude. The E450 will climb those 6% grades in 2nd gear at a speed of 55 mph if you can stand the roar of the engine at about 4500 rpm.

Bill, if you have the numbers it would be quite interesting to compare Miles/Dollar.
MPD so to speak. Statistics - this year vs last year or future years.

Re: Born Free Gas Mileage
Oliver,
Well I totaled up all of my fuel tickets for the round trip and I purchased 399 gallons fuel at a total cost of $681.71. So my average fuel cost was $1.7085/gallon. The fuel cost per mile = $681.71/3467 = $0.1966/mile.
Of course the fuel cost this year was significantly lower than for the trip last year.

Re: Born Free Gas Mileage
We just returned home after a 12,300 mile drive of the Alaskan Highway and just about every other paved road in Alaska. Prior to the trip I installed an Ultra Gauge, http://www.ultra-gauge.com/ultragauge, mainly to monitor fuel level and information such as remaining fuel in the tank, miles until empty and time remaining until empty.
What I really appreciated was the ability to glance at the gage and know, in real time, the remaining fuel at any point in time. It allowed us to drive longer distances between fueling without the concern of running out of gas.

I made my first trip with my BF20 attached to the back of my 1999 f350 diesel. Trip total was 211 miles and averaged 15.8mpg not too shabby for an estimated 11,000 lb rig.

Not bad gas mileage hairball..... you must have a cat
Speaking of diesel, does anybody have the new Born Free MB Sprinter?
If so, what kind of gas mileage are you getting.
Thanks..
