2009 BORN FREE LEAP'N LIONS SAN LUIS OBISPO RALLY

Post by bfadmin »

The Rally opened on Monday April 27th with 29 coaches in attendance and 50 people. John Dodgen and Jim Downing put on a great pork and chicken BBQ for all in attendance on Monday evening. Those in attendance brought salads etc to go with the BBQ. We were sorry that Wanda Dodgen was unable to be there.

Tuesday after breakfast by the hosts the day was on your own. Some went to Hearst Castle, Morro Bay, Pismo Beach and other interesting spots. The evening dinner was put on by Darrell and was BBQ chicken, salad and all the trimmings with home made cookies by our own Joanne Leadbetter.

Wednesday started off with breakfast and then we caravanned to Montana de Oro State Beach State Park for an "old fashioned" picnic put on by the Badger family. Little Becka Badger and her baby sister were loved by everyone. Some did some hiking along the beach bluff others just enjoyed the rough ocean shoreline. At the evening dinner Darrell put on a Tri Tip dinner with brownies and ice cream for desert.

Thursday started off with breakfast followed with a caravan to the Baileyana/ Tangent Winery. Once at the winery we were split into 2 groups one to go to thru the winery first while the other group boarded an " old Fashioned " trolley and have a conducted tour of the vineyard. It was interesting to hear about the numerous varieties of grapes that are grown and how they care for the plants and the ground all year long. Those going thru the winery learned how the grapes for white and red wine are processed differently and the many steps that are involved in making wine. Then we switched tours. Brandon, the winery tour director made sure all questions were answered as did the vineyard manager and the pest control lady who rode the trolley. The winery not only processes their own grapes but custom crushes grapes for several other wineries. They can handle thousands and thousands of gallons wine. After the winery tours we went to their tasting room that is in an old one-room schoolhouse.

Thursday evening we were treated to a Clam Chowder, salad etc. dinner by Chef Bret of the Splash Cafe from Pismo Beach. He was assisted by his wife.

Friday after breakfast we took down the tent, said our good-bys and went our separate ways.

We were pleased to have attendees from Oregon, Michigan, Ohio, Arizona, Nevada, as well as California.

Bob and Carol Newby
