Born Free Leap'n Lions RV Club History

After two years of pandemic-enforced isolation it was wonderful to get out, hit the road, and rally with friends, old and new. Three rallies were hosted by veteran rally planners, while the other three were planned by first-time hosts. Everyone did an exceptional job.

April 3-7 - Anza-Borrego Rally (Hosts: Phyllis and Jim Howard) The Anza-Borrego Rally was held at the Springs of Borrego RV Resort and Golf Course in Borrego Springs, CA. Ten attendees arrived in 5 coaches from 2 states. They were happy to get reacquainted again, especially after the COVID shutdowns. Borrego Springs is a laid back, small community of about 3,000 with a handful of cafés a few shops of interest, and magnificent clear-sky star displays and dramatic sunsets. It is a Dark Sky Community, meaning there is very little light pollution, and some took the opportunity to star-gaze in the amazingly open sky and all watched the International Space Station, the unique science laboratory and home to crews of astronauts and cosmonauts, as it crossed the clear sky directly above. This area is also packed with vistas, canyons, pristine wilderness and rugged formations that are described as some of the most diverse landscapes in the world. Some went on various excursions such as viewing the larger-than-life metal sculptures of various animals commissioned by philanthropist Dennis Avery. Everyone gathered in the evenings at different coaches for wonderful potluck dinners. While there was moderate attendance at the rally, probably due to lingering concerns of COVID, it was another outstanding rally hosted by Phyllis and Jim and a great time was had by all!

April 4-8 - Discover Florida's Nature Coast Rally (Hosts: Joel and Sandy Lefkowitz and Eric and Sue-Ann Sandstrom) This rally was held at the Homosassa River RV Resort in Homosassa Springs, FL. Thirty six participants came in 22 coaches from 9 states. The rally hosts warmly welcomed everyone at the meet and greet (pizza, salad and ice cream) including first timers Paul and Nancy Franklin; Paul talked about his new book titled "Back Roads of Florida". Activities included a guided "Eco Walk" which provided an insight into the Three Sisters Springs and the Crystal River where, unexpectedly, rally-goers saw a manatee and her calf in the river. Additionally, on a visit to the Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park, they saw an array of native Florida animals including birds, mammals, alligators, manatees, even a panther and a non-native hippo named Lu. A heavy appetizer potluck featured Eric Sandstom's legendary Roast Beast - no one left hungry. However, inclement weather canceled an interpretative boat excursion on the Crystal River which allowed an extension of the guided tour at the Archaeology State Park. There, two temple mounds, four burial mounds, and a museum tell the story of this peaceful cultural site which was abandoned after 1500 years. This was another exceptional rally from these experienced rally hosts!

June 8-11 - Great Lakes Area Indiana FMCA Rally (Hosts: Nick and Dee Dee McClain and Ron and Mary Bash) The Great Lakes Area Indiana FMCA Rally was held at the Elkhart County 4-H Fairgrounds in Goshen, IN. Sixteen attendees came in 9 coaches from 8 states. To reach the fairgrounds in the rolling hills of northeast Indiana attendees passed through small rural towns along the Heritage Trail with plots of gorgeous flowered garden quilts. Additionally, they passed farm after farm with majestic and historic barns (some with quilts painted on them), sometimes slowing down to accommodate the leisurely-paced Amish buggies sharing the road. Additionally, ripe, red, delicious Indiana strawberries were in season and in full abundance with signs advertising them for sale at both fruit stands and u-pick patches along the way. At the rally, attendees were graciously greeted by the hosts and newly elected NC Regional VP Anton and Carolyn Hol. Born Free campsite activities on various evenings included a traditional pot-luck dinner, at which Ron and Mary served up delicious barbecue sandwiches, a pizza party, and strawberry shortcake. FMCA rally activities included various seminars, craft classes, coach weighing, book exchanging, and 3 nights of entertainment. It was just a great place to be!

August 21-26 - Durango/Mesa Verde Colorado Rolling Rally (Host: Pam Clark) This rolling rally was held at both the Oasis RV Resort & Cottages in Durango, CO and the Mesa Verde National Park. Twenty participants came in 11 coaches from 8 states. At Durango, rally-goers boarded the 1881 Durango & Silverton Train for an day-long round trip which took them through the breathtakingly beautiful scenery of sheer rock walls, deep gorges, whitewater and waterfalls with a lunch stop at the old mining town of Silverton, established in 1884. After a free day to do as they pleased, the group caravaned approximately 30 miles over a winding scenic road to the Morefield Campground at the Mesa Verde National Park. There they dry-camped for 2 days as deer leisurely meandered through the Born Frees in this wilderness campground. While at Mesa Verde the group shopped at the Far View Visitor Center, took a ranger-led half-day tour through the ancient cliff dwellings and attended a fabulous farewell evening dinner at the Metate Room Restaurant. This was the first rally planned and hosted by Pam and it was impressive!

September 11-15 - Cape May, NJ Rally (Hosts: Bob and Marilyn Gray and Jerry and Mary Breu) This rally was based at the Avalon Campground in Clermont, NJ. Seventeen attendees came in 8 coaches from 6 states where they were greeted by the hosts and welcomed to the rally. Scheduled events included a guided trolley tour through Cape May, a tour of the Emlen Physick Estate, and lunch at Harry's Bar & Grill. Then it was off to Sunset Beach to see a half-sunken concrete ship, the SS Atlantus. Later, some went to the Washington Street Mall for an afternoon of shopping. Additional activities included a 2 hour boat ride with Captain Bill on the Skimmer Salt Marsh Safari, a delicious lunch at the Lobster House and then a visit to the Cape May Zoo. There was a guided tour of the Naval Air Station Wildwood Museum, lunch in the Flight Deck Diner, free time, and a pizza party. While the pizza party was in progress, an electrical transformer failed at the campground and the lights went out causing the group to relocate outside for the remainder of the pizza party. The day ended with a terrific campfire. This was the first rally planned and hosted by Marilyn and Bob and with the help of their co-hosts Jerry and Mary it was awesome!

September 21-24 - Maryhill, WA Columbia River Rally (Hosts: Mike Gillespie and Nancy Wolf) The last rally of the year was held at the Maryhill State Park in Maryhill, WA. Twenty three participants came in 13 coaches from 5 states to this beautiful campsite with trees, lush green surroundings and an elaborate pavilion. Attendees were warmly greeted by the hosts and given rally bags with hand-outs and area brochures. Tours of coaches were held whereby participants showed the uniqueness of each of their coaches. All enjoyed a visit to the Maryhill Museum which consists of four floors and is out in the middle of nowhere. It holds many Native American artifacts, the throne and crown from Romania, many pieces by the artist Rodin, a whole floor of various kinds of unusual chest sets, and much more. Other great activities included a visit to a full-sized Stonehenge replica, a visit to the Goldendale Observatory to see stars and planets in the night sky (where attendees learned that soon the north star will be changing to another star). Some hiked into another state park to see many petroglyphs/pictographs and later went to the Waving Tree Winery. Additionally, rally participants had many wonderful meals and great campfires. This amazing rally was superbly planned and hosted by first time rally planners Mike and Nancy and everyone had a wonderful time!

Again in 2021, out of an abundance of caution due to the Pandemic, the Club decided to not hold rallies until it appeared conditions were improving. Then, in late summer as conditions started to improve, it was decided to proceed with the fall National Rally.

September 19-23 - The 9th Biennial National Rally (Hosts: Nick and Dee Dee McClain; Jerry and Mary Breu; Bill Meier) The hosts, along with more than 60 wonderful volunteers, held the rally at the impressive Hart Ranch Camping Resort near Rapid City, South Dakota under mostly sunny skies and in very comfortable conditions. Eighty-four folks, including 24 first timers, came in 46 coaches from 27 states for the purpose of having a great time and conducting the biennial business meeting. The event was kicked off with the ever-friendly Meet and Greet where attendees were treated to wine, catered heavy appetizers, and an excellent presentation by award-winning author Dr. David Wolff (an associate professor of history at Black Hills State University), Spearfish, South Dakota. Monday found most everyone on the all-day guided bus tour through the magnificent Black Hills which included a scrumptious western-style breakfast at Ft. Hays Chuckwagon (movie set for Dances with Wolves), a stop at Mt. Rushmore, lunch at the State Game Lodge in Custer State Park, another stop at Crazy Horse Memorial and supper/entertainment back at Ft. Hays Chuckwagon. Tuesday's activities included the biennial business meeting chaired by President Jerry during which all club officer positions were filled for the first time in recent memory. A presentation on the Born Free RV Happy Campers USA Facebook group followed, then there were a Technical Seminar, Ladies Tea, Silent Auction and an evening Pizza Party with non-perishable food donations serving as tickets to this event. The Silent Auction proceeds and food donations totaled approximately $2,960 for the local Rapid City Salvation Army Food Pantry. Wednesday was a free day for attendees to do as they wished, culminating with the usual group photo and catered evening banquet. Bill Meier, VP-NC Region, was recognized for his and late wife Rozella's considerable contributions to the Club over the years. The dinner ended with entertainment which was, appropriately enough, the movie Dances With Wolves. Thursday found attendees at the catered breakfast reminiscing about the good times just had, some making plans to meet up again down the road and all saying their goodbyes. Yes, it was a great place to be!

May 6-10 - Las Cruces/Mesilla New Mexico Rally (Hosts: Jim and Phyllis Howard; Bill and Nancy MacLean) Held at the Hacienda RV Resort in Las Cruces, NM. Twenty-six members arrived in 14 coaches from 6 states coming from as far away as Pennsylvania and Florida. Ralliers were warmly greeted by the hosts at their traditional appetizer potluck reception. There Bill gave a great overview of the area. Activities included a guided tour of the Civil War and Wild West-rich town of Mesilla, a tour and meal at the La Posta de Mesilla restaurant (founded in 1939), happy hour with great games conducted by Ken & Beth Giannotti, a walk to the Las Cruces Farmers Market and visitations to museums nearby. Rally attendees enjoyed several fine dinners and a huge breakfast, all catered by Cracker Barrel, and watched the Giannottis's video of a previous Lone Pine Rally. Additionally, they visited the living history New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum which included a knife making demonstration and various farm animals. Wendy Schwerin gave everyone handmade fairy lights to light the way to their coaches at night. They had good weather, great facilities, fun food, historical activities, games and great conversation. It was an awesome rally!

May 19-23 - The 8th Biennial National Rally & 20th Anniversary Celebration (Hosts: Nick and Dee Dee McClain; Jerry and Mary Breu) Thanks to 60 wonderful volunteers, this rally was held at the Amana RV Park & Event Center at Amana, Iowa. One hundred six members, including 24 first timers, came in 56 coaches from 26 states for the purpose of reconnecting, celebrating the club's 20th anniversary and conducting the biennial business meeting. The 20th Anniversary Celebration included heavy appetizers with wine (served in special take-home memento wine glasses), an historical presentation of major club events, recognition of founding members, slide show of rallies/caravans over the past 20 years, group sing-along of our signature song, "Born Free", and ended with the cutting of the 20th anniversary cake. President Jerry conducted the business meeting which included minutes of the last meeting, accepted as read, treasurer's report, accepted as read, election of club officers, and special recognition of Bill Hemme (retiring website administrator). New club officers are Pam Clark (VP-SC Region) and Roger Hakeman and Diane Burrows Co-Website Administrators with the position of VP-NW Region still open and needing to be filled. Other activities included delicious catered meals, a guided bus tour of the Amana colonies, bus trip to the Herbert Hoover Presidential Museum, ladies tea, elegant style show, technical panel, painting class, fun raffles for various prizes, charity raffle and donations netting $2,205 for the Shriners Hospitals for Children, and a celebration of Irene Bezak's 100th birthday. The grand finale was a splendid farewell banquet of barbeque ribs and chicken (with all the trimmings) followed by a rompin', stompin' good ole country-western concert to wrap up a perfect national rally. It was just a great place to be!

June 21- July 29 - Return to Canadian Maritimes Caravan (Guide: Adventure Treks) For 39 days eight members in four coaches from four states traveled 3,000 miles starting at St. Andrews, NB through Nova Scotia to Newfoundland, back through Nova Scotia, and ending at Prince Edward Island. It included passage on ferries, bus tours, boat tours, live plays, meals, museums and frequent get-togethers. They enjoyed stunning land and seascapes, charming villages, bustling harbors, quaint fishing settlements, awesome historical sites, fascinating wildlife (including whales, eagles, gannets, puffins, cormorants, murres, guillemots) and wonderful seafood restaurants. Highlights included: dinner at Reversing Falls (Saint John, NB), tour of Cape Enrage Lighthouse overlooking Bay of Fundy (Moncton, NB), Historical Gardens and Port-Royal National Historic Site (Annapolis Royal, NS), city tour and visit to the Titanic Graveyard (Halifax, NS), Swiss Air Flight 111 Memorial (Peggy's Cove, NS), all day bus tour of Cabot Trail (North Sydney, NS), a "Screech In" welcome to Newfoundland party (Grand Codroy, NL), narrated bus tour including the Wildlife Museum and Rose Blanche Lighthouse (Grand Codroy, NL), Viking settlement and Viking Feast (St. Anthony, NL), North Atlantic Aviation Museum (Gander, NL), all day tour of "Land of Anne" with an evening dinner and the musical "Anne of Green Gables"(PEI). The farewell Lobster Dinner was held in Rustico, PEI. It was a fantastic caravan!

October 28 - November 1 - Banning Palm Springs Area Rally (Hosts: Jim and Phyllis Howard; Ken and Beth Giannotti) Held at the Banning Stagecoach KOA in Banning CA. Sixteen members came in 9 coaches from 5 states. Attendees were graciously welcomed to the rally by the hosts at their traditional heavy appetizer reception. Each day was started with a light coffee cake breakfast except for a one-day surprise - a full bacon-pancake breakfast prepared by Rich & Wendy Schwerin. Activities included Kimberly Crest Mansion and Gardens, Halloween-decorated Victorian manson with lunch, Riley's Farm where attendees had a hayride and learned how to shoot with bows and arrows and throw hatchets, lunch at the farm's Hawks Head Tavern served up by folks in 1770's attire and using period accents, and the Native American Malki Museum with dinner in the coffee shop. One evening after a macaroni and cheese/salad dinner the Giannottis took over the entertainment with their inventive games which is always a highlight of this region's rallies. In spite of high wind and red-flag warnings, these hardy rally souls persevered and had a great time. It was a wonderful rally!

March 15-18 - FMCA Perry Georgia Rally (Hosts: Eric and Sue-Ann Sandstrom; Joel and Sandy Lefkowitz) Held within the FMCA's EXPO "Southern Charm in Perry Rally" at the Perry Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter in Perry, GA. Thirty-four members in 18 coaches arrived from 8 states. While the huge EXPO was a beehive of activity, there was also a lot of buzzing going on in the always friendly and sociable Born Free Leap'n Lions RV Club campsite. It was an ideal place for club members to catch up, enjoy time together and take a break from the numerous, fun and informative agenda items on the EXPO convention program. Activities at the Born Free Leap'n Lions campsite included: the always popular wine and cheese social, a delicious potluck dinner with Eric's succulent roast beast and a celebration of Irene Bezak's 99th birthday. The cool evenings found ralliers seated around Steve and Pat's cozy campfire enjoying its warmth and discussing important matters. Additionally, Irish hearts were happy when the O'Prestons and O'Rhodes showed up wearing green apparel with shamrocks and such in observance of St. Patrick's Day. It was just a fantastic rally.

May 7-11 - Paso Robles Wine Country Rally (Hosts: Phyllis and Jim Howard) Held at the Wine Country RV Resort in Paso Robles, CA. Thirty-one participants came in 17 coaches from 4 states to the oak-studded hills of San Luis Obispo County. Ralliers were graciously greeted by hosts Phyllis and Jim and each attendee got an RV-motif pillowcase handcrafted by Wendy Scherwin who also led the group in a rock painting session. Delicious meals included: a coffee cake breakfast, a Santa Maria-Style barbecue, fish and chips enjoyed bayside at Giovanni's Restaurant and several scrumptious potluck dinners. Activities included: an optional wine tour offered by Grapeline Wine Tours, Captain Stew's Bay Cruise of Morro Bay (with entertainment provided by the local and playful otters), the Estrella Warbird Museum and the Pioneer Museum. Also, there were rousing games of bocce ball. The rally ended with the making of a video of all attendees in front of their own coaches waving and shouting the Born Free club name. The video was further enhanced by the barking and antics of their small furry club members and the waving of others in the RV park who were observing this lively activity. Everyone had a great time.

June 4-8 - Ohio Lake Erie Shores and Islands Rally (Hosts: Ron and Mary Bash) Held at the Tall Timbers Campground and Resort in Port Clinton, OH. Thirty-one members traveled in 16 coaches from 13 states to this rally located along the north coast of Ohio known as the Lake Erie Shores and Islands. The rally kickoff included local wines, cheeses, crackers, other hors d'oeuvres, and the typical tasty Leap'n Lions potluck (always much variety and more than enough). Each day started with breakfast that included Mary's delicious homemade breads supplemented with pastries from local bakeries. Mary also graciously prepared campsite lighthouse markers for the rally. A wonderful lunch was held at local favorite Ciao Bella Restaurant where everyone had a choice of several delicious pasta and pizza dishes. Guided tours included: Put-in-Bay Village on South Bass Island (location of Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial), the home and museum of former Ohio governor and 19th President Rutherford B. Hayes and The Liberty Aviation Museum. Also, ralliers visited two lighthouses along the coast. Evenings found ralliers at either the card table watching Jim Birdsell making 13 perfect bids in a 13 hand game or seated around the warm and inviting campfire casually chatting of the good times had by all. It was a terrific rally.

September 23-27 - Vermont Foliage Rally (Hosts: George and Sue Boley; Ron and Bobbie Warmbier) Held at the Lazy Lions Campground in Graniteville, VT. Thirty-one members drove in 16 coaches from 10 states to attend this early fall rally in the Green Mountains of Vermont. The changing colors of the leaves were just starting to show a hint of the magnificent Vermont autumn splendor yet to come. Excellent guided tours included: the famous Hope Cemetery, Rock of Ages Granite Quarry and the Vermont Teddy Bear Company. Other great activities included: lunch at the Millstone Hill B & B with an historical presentation by the owner and a visit to Burlington's Shelburne Museum. A free day allowed ralliers to visit other local attractions such as: Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream, the Cider Mill, Cabot Cheese, Trapp Family Lodge or just relax. There was a cozy clubhouse on site which was used for a tasty pancake breakfast, an evening pizza party, celebration of Fred Nielsen's birthday and various card games in which some members competed for bragging rights. What a great rally.

September 28-October 2 - Gettysburg Battlefield Rally (Hosts: Helen and Larry Hornbake) Held at the Gettysburg Campground in Gettysburg, PA. Thirty-nine members came in 20 coaches from 12 states to this rally located at the site of the largest battle ever fought in the US. It started as a chance encounter between the Union and Confederate armies, lasted only 3 days and was one of the most decisive and turning-point battles of the Civil War. While this area is most sobering because of its historical significance, it is also a very scenic step back in time to 1863 as you walk past numerous historic buildings in town or view the wood fencing, stone walls, field artillery and old farm homes across the rolling hills. Rally events included excellent guided tours of the Military Park battlefield, the Eisenhower Farm and the Hauser Estate Winery with a tasting. There was an excellent presentation at the Seminary Ridge Museum with lunch at the refectory. The rally also included visits to the Military Park Museum and Cyclorama. Additionally, there was a great pizza party, campfires, a celebration of Sue Sandstrom's birthday and the usual cast of characters continuing the card game marathon from previous rallies. This was a wonderful rally.

October 18-19 - Reno, Nevada Rally (Hosts: Don and Beverly Bedard; Bill and Nancy MacLean) Held at the Gold Ranch RV Resort in Verdi, NV. Twenty-one attendees came in 12 coaches from 3 states to attend this rally located in a high desert area at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. This rally started off on an unusually cool evening with the traditional heavy appetizer potluck dinner held in the resort's reception area with warm glowing embers burning in the cozy fireplace. Again, the always thoughtful Wendy Schwerin delighted attendees with hand made solar-powered fairy lights in a mason jar and single sealed wine glasses with wine for everyone. This outstanding Bedard/MacLean rally included visits to the Kimmie Candy Factory, Harrah's Auto Museum, Nevada Historical Society, University of Nevada Planetarium and the Wilbur May Museum. Additionally, there was a picnic lunch at the RV park, a Basque dinner at Louie's Restaurant and a dinner at the Boomtown Buffet. It was a marvelous rally.

February 2-5 - FMCA Lakeland, FL SEA Rally (Hosts: Eric and Sue-Ann Sandstrom; Joel and Sandy Lefkowitz) Held within the FMCA rally on the Sun 'n' Fun Expo Campus at Lakeland Linder Regional Airport in Lakeland, Florida. Thirty-six members in 20 coaches from 8 states attended. Participants enjoyed a tasty pot-luck dinner featuring Eric's famous "roast beast", a nice Ladies Luncheon and a really cool ice cream social. Some went on the famous "Dean Preston Strawberry Shortcake Run" where they enjoyed one of the best strawberry shortcake venues in Florida. They also attended several good seminars, viewed the latest in RV gadgets and products at vendor booths, and one of our members won a 3-night stay in an exclusive RV resort. Evening entertainment included: McMillian Family Show, country singer Kenny Evans, Sunday Drive (played great music from the 50s and 60s) and some even stayed for a great Super Bowl party in Hangar A. It was a very exciting rally.

April 23-27 - Leap'n Lions Biennial National Rally (Hosts: Phyllis and Jim Howard) Held at the Newport Dunes RV Resort in Newport Beach, California. Thirty-seven members came in 20 coaches from 11 states. President Dean Preston chaired the biennial business meeting and recognized all officers for the great job they are doing. Highlights of the meeting may be summarized as follows: minutes of the past meeting were accepted as read, treasurer's report was accepted as read, 7 of 11 executive board members are continuing for another 2 year term, and the positions of President, VPNW Region, VPSC Region and Rally/Caravan Coordinator are open. Members thanked outgoing President Dean for his many years of excellent club leadership. Additionally, members enjoyed a day trip to Catalina Island, tour of the late actor John Wayne's Wild Goose yacht and a hardy, self-paddled outrigger canoe tour of the bay area. The last evening was spent relaxing out in the warm California air, eating a delicious barbeque dinner, listening to Jim Roberts sing and play tunes from days gone by and watching a beautiful sunset over the lovely bay. It was a great place to be.

May 15 The Born Free factory closed unexpectedly.

June 25-July 28 - Alaska Caravan (Guide: Bob Newby) Departed from the Mile "0" RV Park in Dawson Creek, British Columbia Canada. For 35 days Bob led 11 caravaners in 6 coaches from 4 states approximately 4,200 miles from Dawson Creek up the Alaska Highway and beyond. They drove through British Columbia, Alaska, the Canadian Yukon Territory and back to Dawson Creek. Caravaners enjoyed a sternwheeler boat ride at Fairbanks, a 12-hour scenic wildlife bus tour of Denali National Park, a scenic wildlife/glacier boat cruise at Whittier, AK and a relaxing dinner cruise on the Yukon River at Dawson City, YT. They also enjoyed a scenic wildlife lunch cruise from Skagway, AK to Juneau, AK (and return), a bus trip to the Mendenhall Glacier at Juneau and several dinners along the way. Optional activities included flying through the mountains to see the peak of Denali and landing on Pica Glacier, riding dog sleds at Wasilla, AK (Iditarod Headquarters), and traversing part of the old gold rush trails by train at Skagway. Caravaners observed rows of picturesque snow capped mountain peaks stretched to the sky, cruised on scenic winding rivers flowing between the rugged mountains, witnessed colorful lakes gleaming in the sunlight and visited magnificent frozen glaciers. They sighted abundant wildlife on the ground, in the water and in the air, and enjoyed warm glowing campfires and great fellowship along the way. It was just a wonderful and fantastic journey.

August 3-6 - Northeast Area Rally, FMCA (Hosts: Charlie and Helen Hathaway) Held at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse, NY. Twelve members in 6 coaches from 4 states attended. This rally was held within FMCA's Northeast Area "We Love New York Rally" and included all the activities, tours and entertainment of that wonderful rally. Attendees enjoyed good food, great tours, outstanding educational seminars, lively entertainment and great fellowship. Seminars included: Traveling to Alaska, Planning your Canadian Maritime Trip, Understanding Computer Back-ups, and more. Two (2) members won a discount on a caravan trip to Alaska. Evening entertainment included: a grand tribute to Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra titled "One for the Road", a show titled "Legends and Laughter", and the last evening show titled "A Little Bit Country/A Little Bit Rock and Roll". All were very good. Everyone had a terrific time.

September 6-10 - The Leap'n Lions Fall Rally (Hosts: Ed and Lois Goering) Held at Pioneer Trails RV Resort in Corvallis, OR. Eight members came in 4 coaches from 2 states. They gathered to explore this wonderful area and enjoy each other's company. The weather was marvelous for the ferry ride to and from San Juan Island where it docked at Friday Harbor, WA. Members enjoyed a wonderful tour of the island, learned about the Pig War, lunched at a hotel in Roche Harbor (where they saw yachts from around the world in the harbor) and visited the Alpaca and Lavender farms. They also got a glimpse of the very beautifully landscaped San Juan Island Sculpture Park. Other activities included a guided historical tour through Anacortes, WA and a boat ride through Deception Pass at Deception Pass State Park (Washington's most-visited state park noted for its breath-taking views, old growth forests and abundant wildlife). Here they viewed wildlife up close, from eagles and other wild birds to water animals. A good time was had by all.

October 22-26 - California Central Coast Rally, Bueliton/Solvang (Hosts: Phyllis and Jim Howard) Held at Flying Flags RV Resort in Bueliton, CA. Twelve members participated and came in 7 coaches, all from California. Participants enjoyed camping, relaxing and touring in this lovely oak-studded rural rolling and breath-taking vineyard coastal area of Santa Barbara County. The resort was nicely appointed with great amenities including: kitchen-equipped meeting room, exercise equipment, new bocce ball courts near the RV sites, and a swimming pool which was very much appreciated due to the record warm California temperatures. Everyone enjoyed the Scandinavian bakeries, restaurants, pastry shops and wine tasting opportunities, many within walking distance. They ate at the famous Pea Soup Restaurant and toured the La Purisima Mission located in the La Purisima Mission State Historic Park (considered to be the most completely restored Spanish mission in California). On the last evening participants enjoyed lively games of bocce ball and a great catered picnic dinner at the courts. What a grand rally.

February 25-29 - Nevada Balloon Festival Rally (Hosts: Jim and Phyllis Howard) Held at the Wine Ridge RV Resort in Pahrump, Nevada. Twenty-six members attended in 14 coaches from 4 states. Participants enjoyed the spectacular Third Annual Pahrump Balloon Festival. This included early morning, multi-colored balloon ascensions, brilliant evening balloon glow light shows, carnival, food, art and craft booths, and entertainment. They also enjoyed a private tour and excellent wine tasting at the Pahrump Valley Winery, a trip to the Pahrump Valley Museum, and a vintage luncheon. Some members gave stellar performances at the karaoke event. After the rally several members caravanned to Death Valley where they toured the visitor's center, Furnace Creek ranch areas and the Borax Museum. It was a very spectacular and wonderful rally.

March 21-25 - Spring Rolling Rally (Hosts: Jim and Ramona Birdsell; Dick and Marie Holt) Held at the Olde Mill Stream RV Resort in Umatilla, Florida. Twenty-seven members and guests attended in 17 coaches from 8 states. Orange grove owners John and Diane Whitaker welcomed attendees to their lovely plantation lake home, conducted a tour of their large groves and treated everyone to a very delicious catered barbecue. Attendees also participated in a painting class, wine tasting seminar and were entertained by the very talented October Mountain Band. Attendees then caravanned to Weirsdale, Florida to attend a very entertaining jam session at the Orange Blossom Opry and spend the evening socializing and dry camping in the opry parking lot. Everyone had a grand time.

March 30-April 2 - Annual Migration of the Sandhill Cranes Rally (Hosts: Bill and Rosella Meier) Held at the Windmill State Recreation Area in Gibbon, Nebraska. Twenty-three members attended in 12 coaches from 9 states. Participants met each morning for breakfast in the Meier's ballroom. They toured the Classic Car Collection (approximately 200 cars), the Museum of Nebraska Art, Morris Press Cookbooks (nations #1 publisher of cookbooks) and the Archway on I-80 (a structure that recaptures the site where the Oregon trail, Mormon trail, California Trail and Pony Express all crossed Nebraska). However, the highlight was visiting the Rowe Sanctuary and viewing hundreds of thousands (estimated 500,000 each spring) of magnificent Sandhill cranes converging on Nebraska's Platte River valley to rest and refuel prior to continuing north to their nesting grounds. It was a very impressive rally.

August 23-26 - Born Free Homecoming Rally (Hosts: Jeff Butler and the Born Free Team) Held at the Born Free Factory in Humboldt, Iowa. Eighty-three members and others attended in 47 coaches from 18 states. Owners enjoyed the opportunity to have minor repairs done on their coaches by expert factory personnel and some owners offered coach improvement ideas on the Customer Advisory Panel. Attendees competed for prizes and bragging rights in the Born Free Olympic games. Additionally, they line danced, decorated cakes, golfed, played bingo, had chair massages (oh, those chair massages), took factory tours and enjoyed great food. Entertainment included karaoke, a movie night and the fabulous Avery County Showtime Band. Highlights were interacting with all the wonderful Born Free team members again and reconnecting with each other. Everyone had a great time renewing friendships, enjoying a relaxing time, and seeing some of the new 2017 models. It was a great place to be.

September 12-16 - Genesee Country Rally (Hosts: Charlie and Helen Hathway) Held at Genesee Country Campground near Caledonia, New York. Twenty-eight members attended in 15 coaches from 12 states. Attendees toured Letchworth State Park (renowned as the Grand Canyon of the East), had a delightful lunch at the park's outstanding Glen Iris Inn and enjoyed the beautiful grounds of this award-winning state park (winner of USA Today's "Best State Park in the United States Award"). Attendees also toured the 600 acre, 19th century Genesee Country Village, the George Eastman House and the Genesee Brewery which included a tasting and a very delicious lunch. President Dean Preston was presented an award for his many years of distinguished service to the club. It was truly a fantastic rally.

October 10-14 - Trinidad Bay Rally (Hosts: Jim and Phyllis Howard) Held at the Emerald Forest RV Park in Trinidad, California. Twenty-three members attended in 10 coaches from 3 states. Participants enjoyed the absolutely beautiful forest setting, camping among the tall ageless redwoods and surrounded by surf-scoured beaches. They caravanned to Patrick's Point State Park, toured a recreated Yurok Indian village, and visited the historic village of Trinidad browsing through shops, enjoying food from various cafes, and tasting wine at the Bergeron Winery. They hiked through the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary, ate at the Samoa Cookhouse, visited the Blue Ox Museum, had a great dinner and were entertained by the terrific Blue Lotus Jazz at Celebration Hall. It was a very delightful rally and a great way to end the summer.

February 9-11 - Lazydays/Born Free RV Tampa Rally (Hosts: Lazydays and Born Free) Held at the Lazydays RV Campground in Seffner, Florida. Forty-six members attended in 23 coaches from 8 states. Members competed in entertaining games for prizes and bragging rights. They attended seminars on RV maintenance, convection oven cooking and vehicle towing. They also submitted improvement ideas on a Customer Advisory Panel and they learned what changes and innovations were happening at Born Free under new management. Additionally, they enjoyed good food including a chuck wagon dinner party and good entertainment including a 4-piece band playing oldies/pop. It was a great rally.

February 11-14 - FMCA Sarasota SEA Rally (Hosts: Eric and Sue-Ann Sandstrom; Joel and Sandy Lefkowitz) Held at Sarasota County Fairgrounds in Sarasota, Florida. Thirty-four members attended in 18 coaches from 9 states. Participants attended numerous seminars and enjoyed several evenings of great entertainment provided by FMCA. They also held their own social events including some potluck dinners and spent one evening at the highly regarded Amish "Der Dutchman Restaurant". Everyone had a delightful time.

March 6-8 - Lazydays/Born Free Tucson Rally (Hosts: Lazydays and Born Free) Held at the Lazydays and KOA Campground in Tucson, Arizona. Forty-four members attended in 22 coaches representing 8 states. Members competed in enjoyable games for prizes and bragging rights. They attended seminars on maintaining your RV, cooking with a convection oven and driving with a towed vehicle. They also submitted improvement ideas by participating in a Customer Advisory Panel and learned what changes and innovations were occurring at Born Free under new management. Additionally, they were treated to good food and entertainment.

April 8-12 - Lone Pine & Alabama Hills Rally (Hosts: Jim and Phyllis Howard) Held at the Boulder Creek RV Resort in Lone Pine, California. Thirty-six members attended in 18 coaches from 5 states. Participants enjoyed the spectacular terrain of the Alabama Hills, the Museum of Western Film History, the Eastern California Museum, Manzanar National Historic Site, the Tule elk viewing area and a beautiful chateau and its surrounding grounds. They also star-gazed and attended the Alabama Hills Day event in Lone Pine. What an amazing rally.

June 9-12 - Born Free RV Homecoming Rally (Host: Born Free RV) Held at the Born Free Factory in Humboldt, Iowa. It was attended by 190 members in 102 coaches from 25 states. Owners had minor repairs done on their coaches by the expert factory personnel and they offered improvement ideas on the Customer Advisory Panel. Attendees competed for prizes and bragging rights in the Born Free Olympic Games, line danced, painted pictures, golfed, took factory tours, attended several presentations and enjoyed good food and entertainment. Highlights were seeing all the wonderful Born Free employees again, meeting Jeff Butler (new President and CEO) and unveiling of the new 2016 Born Free Motor Coach models. Everyone had a great time renewing friendships, enjoying a relaxing time, and seeing the new 2016 models. It was a great place to be.

June 15-19 - Discover Door County Wisconsin Rally (Hosts: Pat and Dick Dittmer; Mary and Dick Holt) Held at Bailey's Grove Campground in Bailey's Harbor, Wisconsin. Seventy members attended in 36 coaches from 18 states. Participants visited the Maritime Museum, the Door County Museum and the Seaquest Market. They also took a relaxing cruise on Green Bay aboard the Captain Charlie's Washington Island Ferry. Additionally, attendees enjoyed a traditional Door County Fish Boil at the campground and the "Infamous" chefs from Born Free provided a bar-b-que. This was a wonderful rally.

June 22-July 25 - North to Alaska/Yukon Caravan (Guide: Bob Newby; Sponsor: Born Free Motor Coach) For 33 days, the 21 caravaners in 11 Born Free Motor Coaches from 10 states travelled over 3,600 miles from Dawson Creek, BC up the Alaska Highway and beyond through British Columbia, Alaska, the Canadian Yukon Territory and back to Dawson Creek. They drove over paved, gravel and dirt roads, cruised on calm and turbulent waterways and walked on rugged hiking trails to experience the most majestic, beautiful and dense wilderness scenery of this last frontier. Along the way they developed great friendships, enjoyed good meals together and entertained each other around campfires. They ate delicious cinnamon buns at the Shepard's Inn, relaxed at Liard Hot Springs, crossed the continental divide, took a 12-hour bus tour of Denali National Park and had a wildlife spotting/glacier viewing cruise out of Valdez. They ferried their coaches across the Yukon River, took a relaxing dinner cruise at Dawson City and had a wildlife spotting/dinner cruise to and from Juneau. They observed breathtaking landscape at almost every turn in the road and/or bend in the river and viewed several massive glaciers. They a saw lots of wildlife including: bears, bison, caribou, eagles, falcons, fox, geese, goats, lynx, moose, sheep, sea lions, sea otters, whales and a small herd of wild horses. It was indeed an awesome experience and truly an adventure of a lifetime.

September 14-18 - Biennial National Rally (Hosts: Jerry and Mary Breu) Held at Cherry Hill RV Park in College Park, Maryland. It was attended by 90 members in 46 coaches from 23 states and the District of Columbia. President Dean Preston chaired the biennial business meeting and recognized all club officers for the great job they are doing. Highlights of the meeting may be summarized as follows: 8 of 11 executive board members are continuing for another 2 year term, Charles Hathaway is replacing outgoing Bruce Gregory as VPNE Region, the position of Rally/Caravan Coordinator and the position of VPSE Region previously held by Ron Warmbier and Bill Lyon respectively are both now open for replacement. Along with holding the biennial business meeting, club members enjoyed: delightful food with Born Free RV making a sizeable donation towards a main dinner meal, good weather, wonderful sightseeing trips to the Washington DC area, a special and entertaining benefit auction (thanks to George Boley), a benefit raffle (thanks to Mel Wilbur) and great fellowship. The auction and benefit raffle contributed $2,200 to the Shriner's Hospitals for Children. Outstanding!

September 20-27 - Colorful Colorado Caravan (Hosts: Mike and Mary Beth Barmettler) Held high up in the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado with home base at the Ouray KOA in Ouray, Colorado. It was attended by 15 caravaners in 6 coaches from 7 states. For 5 days Mike Barmettler led the 15 member Jeep caravan from Ouray up and down rugged, narrow, steep and curvy roads and trails, with mountain walls on one side and nothing but breathtaking view over the other side. They journeyed to silver and gold mines of long ago, now just ghost towns. They trekked through those beautiful and breathtaking passes at Ophir, Black Bear, Imogene, Engineer, Cinnamon, Corkscrew and California. They explored historic places like Telluride, Ophir Townsite, Red Mountain Town, Animas Forks, Alta, Trout Lake, and Yankee Boy Basin. It was truly a magnificent and spectacular fall adventure.

October 1-5 - Columbia Gold Country Rally (Hosts Jim and Phyllis Howard) Held in the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains at the 49er RV Ranch in Columbia, California. It was attended by 33 members in 17 coaches from 3 states. Members explored Columbia State Park, the town of Murphys, and Railtown in Jamestown (backdrop for such movies as High Noon and Butch Cassidy ...). At Railtown they took an authentic steam train ride into the scenic country side. Additionally, the group enjoyed good food including a dinner at the historic National Hotel sponsored by Born Free and entertainment like "Always Patsy Cline" performed by the acclaimed Sierra Repertory theater players at the historic Fallon House. This was a terrific rally.

January 14-19 - Leap'n Lions Florida RV Super Show (Hosts: Eric and Sue-Ann Sandstrom) There were ten coaches at the rally held in Tampa, FL. Brandon and Julie Dodgen, Ed Newman and Scott Cran from Born Free, and Carl Harr from Liquid Spring, LLC joined the group for a lasagna dinner sponsored by Born Free and prepared by Eric and Sue-Ann. A tour of the Florida Aquarium, a boat ride on Tampa Bay to see the dolphins, great evening entertainment and great food and fellowship were highlights of the RV show along with seeing all the new RVs.

January 29-February 2 - FMCA Brooksville, FL SEA Rally (Hosts: Logan and Andie Mathis) There were seven coaches at the rally held in Brooksville, FL. The attendees visited many of the vendor's tents and attended several seminars. The wind, cold, and rain didn't stop everyone from having a good time. The sun came out the last day. Next year (2015), this rally will be at Sarasota, Fl.

February 21-23 - Tuscon/Layzdays Born Free Rally (Hosts: Layzdays RV Sales and Born Free Factory) Rally held in Tuscon, AZ.

March 6-9 - Florida Treasure Coast Rally (Hosts: Joel and Sandy Lefkowitz) Twenty coaches met at Marsh Landing eatery in Fellsmere. Touring the Navy Seal Museum at Fort Pierce was on the agenda for the next day. Joel and Sandy cooked eggs in a bag for everyone for breakfast.

March 21-23 - Tampa Layzdays /Born Free Rally (Hosts: Layzdays RV Sales and Born Free) Rally held in Tampa, FL.

April 9-13 - Born Free Branson, MO Factory Rally (Host: Born Free) Born Free owners and staff met at the Branson Lakeside RV Park for fun, great food and entertainment. The event included several shows, a riverboat dinner cruise, fun and fellowship. Scott Cran and Ed Newman were the "Grill Masters."

May 14-18 - San Luis Obispo/El Chorro Regional Park Rally (Hosts: Bob and Carol Newby) Twelve coaches were in attendance for this 4-day rally at El Chorro Park. Russ Kimmell, "The Guru of Generators", answered lots of questions Wednesday evening. The men attended a RAMS (Retired Active Men) group meeting where they were treated to a presentation about Lewis and Clark and some history of the indigenous Native American tribes. The women attended an elegant Morning Tea at the Newby family "Quail Creek Ranch". Other activities included lunch and tour of the Madonna Inn grounds, pool and spa, the Botanical Gardens, and a free day to visit other areas or just relax and enjoy the beach.

June 10-13 - Born Free Factory Homecoming (Host: Born Free) Lots of fun, laughter, food, games, line dancing, entertainment and great fellowship was enjoyed by all at the annual Homecoming. The horse and buggy rides were again a huge favorite for the Born Free family. Other highlights were, of course, the presentation of the new coaches, and the outrageously funny and entertaining Water Ballet by CT and the Born Free Staff.

June 17-21 - South Central Regional Rally (Hosts: Bill and Mary Lyon) Held in Shawnee, OK, at the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center. There were 21 coaches with 41 members from 16 states attending. The rally began with a tour of Shawnee, then on to the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art, the local Farmers Market, and a presentation by Linda Capps, Vice-Chairman of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, on how the Nation's leaders are improving the economic and social condition of their people. Other activities included a tour of the National Weather Center at Norman, OK, and a half day at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum. One evening was a trip to Braun's, a local ice creamery where everyone enjoyed some delicious ice cream treats and a visit to see Bill's classic car collection.

September 7-12 - Cape May Rally (Hosts: Bruce and Judy Gregory; Lynn Engleman) Held in Cape May, NJ. Activities included a tour of the Edmund Physic Estate, trolley tour of Historical Cape May, tour of the Naval Air Station (NAS) Wildwood Aviation Museum at the Cape May Airport, The Cape May County Park and Zoo, a salt marsh boat tour to see the wildlife, the Cape May Lighthouse, and an afternoon of shopping at Washington Street Mall. Lunches were enjoyed at the Mad Batter Restaurant, the Flight Deck at Cape May Airport and the Lobster House.

September 13-27 - Caravan to Maritime Provinces, Nova Scotia, Cape Breton and Prince Edward Island (Guides: Brandon and Julie Dodgen) The caravan began at Portland, ME and ended at New Brunswick. The 16-day caravan tour included whale watching, a pewter factory, winery, creamery, distillery, historic gardens and lighthouses. Villages and cities visited included Annapolis Royal, Bear River, Luenburg, Halifax, Pictou, Talamagouche and two days at Prince Edward Island.

September 21-27 - Colorado Caravan (Hosts: Mike and Mary Beth Barmettler) Five days of four wheeling through the high passes of the summit area with beautiful views of the great aspen trees in their beautiful fall colors.

October 1-5 - Santa Barbara Coast Rally (Hosts: Phyllis and Jim Howard) Sixteen coaches and 31 Leap'n Lions and guests met at Ocean Mesa above El Capitan State Beach overlooking the Pacific Ocean. They enjoyed a 2-hour boat cruise into the Santa Barbara Channel where they saw several different species of aquatic wildlife. Other highlights included a free day to visit Santa Barbara, dinner and theater, hiking and a visit to Santa Barbara's Reagan Ranch Center. Lots of fun, food, games, and laughter filled the evening sunsets overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

October 30 - November 2 - Central Florida Fall Rolling Rally (Hosts: Jerry and Sally Wagner; Dick and Marie Holt) A 90-mile Rolling Rally that started at the Orange Blossom Opry in Wiersdale, FL., then on to Umatila for a free day to explore the local attractions. The rally ended at the Wagner's in Astor, FL where a pontoon boat cruise on the St. Johns River was planned.

January 15-20 - The Florida RV Super Show at the Florida State Fairgrounds (Hosts: Eric and Sue-Ann Sandstrom) The largest RV show in the country was held in Tampa with 14 Born Free coaches at this event. This was the beginning of a wonderful year of rallies throughout our beautiful country.

February 5-10 - FMCA Brooksville Florida S.E.A. Rally (Hosts: Logan and Andie Mathis) The event took place at the Hernando Co. Airport. There were 13 BF coaches. Thanks to Eric and Sue-Ann Sandstrom for filling in for Logan who was under the weather.

April 2-5 - The Annual Migration of the Sandhill Cranes (Hosts: Bill and Rosella Meier) Held at Windmill State Recreation Area in Gibbon, Nebraska. There were 16 BF coaches at this spectacular event. The agenda included a trip to the Great Platte River Archway Monument, which is the site where the Mormon California and Oregon trails crossed Nebraska, visiting Norris Press, where a large variety of cookbooks are printed, the Classic Car Museum, and time watching the sandhill cranes feeding during the day and the spectacular return of the cranes to the river at sunset.

April 4-7 - Meet Us at the Rez Rally (Hosts: Joel and Sandy Lefkowitz) The first of three rallies in April. This rally took place at Big Cypress RV Resort in Clewiston, Florida, where twenty attendees were greeted by April showers. Starting out the 4-day event was a very wet swamp buggy ride to see the vast array of animals that call the Everglades their home. The following days' events included a fast and wet air boat ride, a story in song of the boyhood life of a Seminole and a visit to the Seminole Museum.

April 9-13 - Jekyll Island, Georgia Rally (Hosts: Bruce and Judy Gregory) Held at the Jekyll Island Campground. The group toured beautiful Jekyll Island to see where the rich and famous spent their winters from 1886-1942, then on to the Georgia Turtle Center where they care for sick and injured sea turtles.

April 21-24 - Temecula Valley Southern CA Wine Country Rally (Hosts: James and Phyllis Howard) The third rally in April was held at the Pechanga RV Resort. Highlights were the tour to 4 wineries and a hot air balloon ride.

May 29 - June 1 - Northwest Born Free Get-Together (Hosts: Len and Judy Maki) Held at South Beach State Park.

June 9-11 - The Leap'n Lions Biennial National Rally (Hosts: George and Sue Boley; Ron and Bobbie Warmbier) Held at Webster Co. Fairgrounds in Fort Dodge, IA. Highlights were the ladies tea arranged by Ramona Birdsell and the technical seminar organized by Bill Hemme. Lifetime Honorary Membership to the Leap'n Lions RV Club was awarded to Mel and Connie Wilbur. There were 60 coaches at this meeting.

June 12-14 - Factory Homecoming at Humboldt, IA (Hosts: Born Free factory) Another wonderful, fun filled and entertaining time was presented by the Born Free Company and staff. And, of course, all the delicious food. A beautiful presentation of the New Born Free coaches was awesome.

August 18-24 - Annual Colorado Four Wheelers Get-together (Host: Mike Barmettler) Held at the Base Camp Colorado Dream RV Park in Almont, CO.

August 26-30 - Watkins Glen Rally (Hosts: Charlie and Helen Hathaway) Held at the Clute Park and Campground in Watkins Glen NY. Highlights included a tour of the Bully-Hill Vineyards, the Glen Curtis Museum, the Corning Museum and the Rockwell Museum of Western Art.

October 16-20 - Carson City NV Rally (Hosts: Bev and Dob Bedard; Nancy and Bill MacLean) Held at the Gold Dust RV Park in Carson City, NV.

October 31- November 3 - Octoberfest Rolling Rally (Hosts: Dean and Jan Preston) This rolling rally began at the Orange Blossom Opry in Weisdale, FL and ended at DeLeon Springs. The group was entertained at the Orange Blossom Opry, toured the Florida Carriage Museum, enjoyed the German Band and dancers at the Oktoberfest Party, and made their own pancakes at the Old Spanish Sugar mill at DeLeon Springs.

January 10-15 - Leap'n Lions Florida RV SuperShow Rally (Hosts: Eric and Sue-Ann Sandstrom) Our first rally of the year was held at the Florida Sate Fairgrounds in Tampa, FL. Sixteen Born Free coaches with 32 members attended. Although this show was full of entertainment, it was reported that the best entertainment was the night George Boley auctioned off items for charity.

January 31-February 5 - FMCA Brooksville, Florida Rally (Hosts: Eric and Sue-Ann Sandstrom) The second rally of the year was held at the Hernando County Airport in Brooksville, FL. This rally, of which the Born Free Leap'n Lions is a subset, was complete with motorhome displays and dealers, supply and food vendors, great entertainment, and very informative seminars. Twenty-one Born Free coaches with 42 members attended this rally.

April 12-15 - Texas Hill Country Spring Rally (Hosts:Neal and Mary Priestley) Our next rally was at the Fredericksburg RV Park in Fredericksburg, TX. Twenty-one Leap'n Lions attended this event. The main attractions in Fredericksburg were the George H. W. Bush Gallery, the National Museum of the Pacific War and the Admiral Nimitz Museum, both of which can't be adequately toured in only one day. Eleven Born Free coaches with 23 members attended this rally.

April 23-27 - SW Region Newport Beach Rally (Hosts: James and Phyllis Howard) Our fourth rally was held at the Newport Dunes RV Resort in Newport Beach, CA. Fifteen Born Free coaches with 28 members attended this rally. Activities centered on the bay and ocean, including two naturalist-led walks, outrigger canoeing, and a bayside catered barbecue.

May 9-12 - Western Oregon Get-Together (Hosts: Vern and Anne Beeson) The fifth event of the year was at the Stub Stewart State Park located near Buxton, OR. Eighteen Born Free coaches with 33 members enjoyed this rally. A highlight for many was exploring the easily-accessible trails into the surrounding Coast range that originate from the campground, including a portion of the first "Rails-to-Trails" trail in Oregon.

June 4-8 - NC Region Summer Starter Rally (Hosts: Mike and MaryBeth Barmettler) The sixth rally was held at the Eugene Mahoney State Park near Ashland, NE. Highlights of this rally were the tours of Father Flannigan's Boys Town, the Strategic Air & Space Museum, and the Lee Simmons Conservation Park and Wildlife Safari operated by the country's top class Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo. Fourteen Born Free coaches with 27 members attended this event.

August 23-27 - Berkshire Rally (Hosts: Bruce and Judy Gregory; Gary and Suzanne Gulbranson) Held at the Woodland Hills Campground near Austerlitz, NY, there were 35 members in 18 Born Free coaches in attendance. Highlights of this rally were tours of the Hancock Shaker Village, Norman Rockwell Museum and especially the concert at Tanglewood, the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, where the attendees experienced a celebration of fine music including Beethoven's 9th Symphony.

September 10-15 - San Luis Obispo Autumn Rally (Hosts: Bob and Carol Newby) Our eigth rally was at the Chorro Regional Campground near San Luis Obispo, CA. Attending were 14 coaches, 24 members, 10 dogs and four cats. Highlights of this event were visits to San Luis Obispo's Wine Country, Botanical Gardens, Famous Farmer's Market, Firestone Walker Beer Brewery, Baileyana Winery, the historic Mission and up and down the coast from Avila, Cambria to San Simon, and as far as to the Elephant Seals at Piedras Blancas Beach, as well as Pismo Beach. Then, there was the trip to the California Native Plants Nursery, Las Pilitas north of San Luis Obispo in the Foothills above Santa Margarita.

September 23-29 - Aspen Spectacular Get-Together (Hosts: Mike Barmettler; Jeff and Linda Jahrus) Our final event for the year was for the 4-wheeling members of our club and was held in the San Juan mountain areas of southwestern Colorado and was based out of Ouray, CO. Eight Born Free coaches with 15 club members tackled this caravan. Memories and white knuckles were created four wheeling over Imogene Pass, Black Bear Road, Cinnamon Pass, Corkscrew and others. Trail Leaders were chosen each day from veteran off-roaders in the San Juans. Sixteen Born Free coaches with 32 members enjoyed this 4-wheeling caravan.

March 30-April 2 - April Fools Day Rolling Rally (Hosts: Dean and Jan Preston) The first rally of the year was held in Deland, FL. Fourteen hundred coaches and 2600 members attended this event (April Fools!). Actually, it was fourteen coaches and 26 members.

April 11-15 - Southwest Region Born Free Rally (Hosts: Bret and Shari Dattke) Our next rally was held at the Chula Vista RV Resort & Marina in Chula Vista, CA. Sixteen Born Free coaches with 31 members attended this rally.

May 1-? - Key West Florida Rally (Hosts: Gary and Hope Keighley) Our third rally. Fifteen Born Free coaches and 30 members attended this event.

June 26-30 - Born Free Leap'n Lions National Rally (Hosts: Bill and Mary Lyon) Our fifth event was held at the Mountain Views at Rivers Edge RV Resort in Creede, CO. A total of 82 coaches and 161 members attended this event.

July 5-? - Medora North Dakota Rally (Hosts: Gary and Hope Keighley) Eight Born Free coaches with 16 members enjoyed this rally.

September 7-11 - The Covered Bridges of Lane County Rally (Hosts: Coleen and Murray Lorance) The next rally was held at Casey's Riverside RV Park in Westfir, OR. A total of 18 Born Free coaches with 34 members attended this event.

September 29-October 3 - Vermont Foliage Rally (Hosts: Ron and Bobbie Warmbier; George and Sue Boley) The seventh rally of the year was held at the Limehurst Lake Campground in Williamstown, VT. A total of 23 Born Free coaches with 45 members enjoyed this rally.

September 29-October 3 - Big Wine Crush Born Free Rally (Host: Natalie Bradford) At the same time, this rally was held at the Far Horizons 49er RV Resort in Plymouth, CA. Seven coaches and 13 members attended.

February 3-8 - Southeast Area Brooksville, FL FMCA Rally (Hosts: Logan and Andie Mathis) This rally gave everyone a chance to check out the new Born Free Coaches along with the entertainment and vendor displays at the FMCA rally.

April 27-May 1 - San Luis Obispo Rally (Hosts: Bob and Carol Newby) Held in San Luis Obispo, CA. John Dodgen and Jim Downing attended and put on a pork and chicken BBQ which was enjoyed by all.

June 3-7 (Hosts: Coleen and Murray Lorance) Wallowa, WA was the home base for another great rally. The spectacular scenery was matched by the program provided by the hosts.

June 11-14 (Hosts: Karen and Jim Birt) This rally offered a return to Renfro Valley, KY and once again proved to be an excellent choice as everyone enjoyed the music along with catching up with old friends and meeting new ones.

June 18-21 - 3rd Biannual National Rally (Hosts: Mitzi and Bob Scott) 165 happy Born Free owners met in Ft. Dodge, IA. The hosts outdid themselves in organizing and conducting a rally that had something for everyone to enjoy. Following the Sunday morning catered breakfast most all attendees traveled about 20 miles to Humboldt for the factory homecoming and birthday party for John Dodgen.

June 12-15 (Hosts: LeRoy and Lois Molsbee) Chipmunk Crossing RV Park in West Plains, MO was the site for this rally. Along with the other highlights the group was entertained by an Ozark mountain blue grass group that had everyone tapping their toes with the music.

August 10-13 - Les Grande Feux Rally (Hosts: Gary and Hope Keighley) Quebec City, Quebec, Canada was the destination for this rally to watch the international fireworks competition. A luxury coach tour of the city plus a cruise on the St. Lawrence River was topped off by reserved seating at the fireworks competition between 5 countries, a pyrotechnic spectacular.

September 14-20 - Rolling Rally (Hosts: George and Sue Boley) This repeat of last year's rally in New Hampshire was again quickly filled. It started with everyone meeting in the parking lot of a local church followed by a delicious supper put on by the church youth group. Other highlights included visiting a steamboat meet, a tour of The Castle in The Clouds and a scenic train ride which included a turkey dinner as it rolled through the countryside.

October 15-18 (Hosts: Bob and Carol Newby) The final club rally for 2009 was held in Oceano, CA. Everyone enjoyed the Melodrama show and the BBQ dinner. As one member stated "it was our first rally and we enjoyed every minute of it".

Even though gasoline fluctuated to over four dollars a gallon this year, interest in our club's rallies remained strong. The club hosted over 400 ralliers during the year, a testimonial to all our rally hosts, many of whom have developed a strong following. We would also be remiss if we didn't thank Dodgen Industries for sponsoring so many banquets at our rallies. There is not another RV club that receives the kind of factory support that we do.

February - FMCA Rally (Hosts: Logan and Andie Mathis) ...to the next extreme, where we found ourselves camped out in Florida. The group consisted of seventeen coaches who also partook of chili, but of a much different type. The temperatures may have dipped, but not the group's enthusiasm. Once again we headed west where...

April 11-14 - Paso Robles Rally (Hosts: Bob and Carol Newby) ...spring blooms early in California wine country. For the second year, club members migrated to Paso Robles, CA. There our hosts led a wine tasting and fine dining tour for forty-two followers with like palates. Meanwhile back east...

May 12-15 (Hosts: Gary and Hope Keighley) ...in the dairy country of Pennsylvania, thirty-six Born Freers met at Intercourse, to take in the Amish community. Yes, it rained the first day, but that didn't dampen the spirits of the friends that had gathered there. The highlight was a home-cooked meal at an Amish farmhouse. Leaving the farmland, we traveled to...

June 5-8 (Hosts: Ron and Mary Bash) ...the shores of Lake Erie where our hosts had made arrangements to ferry us all out to the Old World charm of Put-in-Bay Island and later treated us to a private concert by a talented harpist. Our annual meeting was also held at this rally. There being no new business, it was adjourned. While fifty-one of us were enjoying Ohio, ...

June 12-15 (Hosts: Karen and Jim Birt) ...others were congregating at Renfro Valley, KY to the south. This rally was attended by eighteen happy campers who enjoyed Kentucky's Country Music Capital. In the meantime...

September 8-14 - Lake Winnipesaukee 7-day Rolling Rally (Hosts: George and Sue Boley) ...George and Sue Boley hosted our first rolling rally. This rally took in three camping sites and many of the Lakes Region's attractions. The rally was capped at fifty reservations and filled up quickly, leaving forty-eight people on a waiting list. While some of us were having fun in the northeast, those in the northwest were attending...

September 10-? - The Island Odyssey Rally (Hosts: Coleen and Murray Lorance) a rally held in Washington state. Thirty-nine Leap'n Lions greeted old friends on Whidbey Island, part of the San Juan chain. Ferry rides, quaint shops and golf were only a part of what they had come for and none were disappointed. (Host: Bill and Mary Lyon) ...Colorado, where longer than anyone can remember, club member and professional off-road guide, Mike Barmettler, led a jeep caravan across the mountains of Breckenridge. September 18-22 - International Seafood Festival (Hosts: Gary and Hope Keighley) ...Prince Edward Island, where forty-five ralliers enjoyed bus and boat tours, chowder fests and Acadian music. October 6-10 (Hosts: Bob Newby; Joanne Ledbetter; Erlaine Gregory) ...Oakhurst, California. This rally hosted twenty-six members. Included was a Born Free caravan to Yosemite Valley and a steam train ride through the mountains. Sadly this rally ended the Leap'n Lions season, after which many of us put our Born Frees to sleep until next year. But, we shall all be forever young as long as we have something to look forward to. In 2006, a new position was added to the club with the appointment of George Boley as our first Rally/Caravan Coordinator. George's job is to make sure at least one rally is planned for each of the six national regions and to organize outside vendor caravans for the Leap'n Lion members. Under George's guidance, 2007 saw our first rally/caravan survey.

January 18-21 - Sixth Annual Quartzsite Rally (Hosts: Jeff and Linda Jahraus) This desert odyssey in AZ gathered 44 Leap'n Lions to share chili and campfire conversations.

January 26-February 21 - Mexico Copper Canyon Caravan (Hosts: Pat and Dick Dittmer) Club members in 18 coaches went on a 26-day trip through the Mexico Copper Canyon.

February 22-25 - Riverboat Rally (Hosts: George and Sue Boley) Next, the Club gathered at Umatilla, FL. Eighty-two members showed up with others waiting for a vacancy. The riverboat was sunk by a tornado two weeks before the rally, but George and Sue pulled a rabbit out of the hat and found an excellent replacement. This rally produced our first white elephant auction with the proceeds going to charity.

April 11-14 - Paso Robles Rally (Hosts: Bob and Carol Newby) We turned our attention to California, where we held a rally in the heart of wine country. It was attended by 30 ralliers. This rally was so well received it is planned again for 2008.

May 31-June 3 (Hosts: Ron and Bobbie Warmbier) Thirty-seven people attended this rally in Port Republic, NJ. Attendees enjoyed free time to explore the many attractions of the Jersey Shore and in the evening were entertained by a great music group, The Pine Barons.

June 9-11 - Amana Colonies Rally (Hosts: Craig and Vickie Ditsworth) Not long after, the club attended the Amana Colonies Rally in Iowa. There were several interesting tours that the 47 attendees enjoyed. As with most of our rallies, Dodgen Industries provided a great meal.

August 5-9 - Miramichi Music Festival Rally (Hosts: Gary and Hope Keighley) On the way to Newfoundland, many members stopped in New Brunswick. There were 38 Leap'n Lions there to enjoy a weekend of Acadian music and hospitality.

August 11-September 7 - Newfoundland Rally (Hosts: George and Sue Boley) After the music and fun, 20 Born Free coaches were ready for the club's second caravan to Newfoundland and Labrador. Caravaners boarded the ferry for a 28-day journey back in time.

August 20-25 - Second Annual Jeep Rally (Hosts: Bill and Mary Lyon) In Gunnison, Colorado the cry was heard "Gentlemen, start your engines!" as Bill and Mary gathered their team of 34 daredevils together and headed for the narrow mountain trails.

September 6-28 - The Best of Michigan Caravan (Hosts: Howard and Barbara Norlin) This 22-day tour took in much of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, highlighting such places as the Henry Ford Museum, Holland's Dutch Village and Mackinac Island.

September 12-16 - Lewis and Clark Rally (Hosts: Jack and Pat Herber; Coleen Lorance) Meanwhile, several of us traveled further west to attend this rally in Astoria, Oregon. There were many tours associated with this rally. Once again, the Born Free factory hosted a great banquet for the 32 club members who attended.

September 19-23 - National Rally (Hosts: Logan and Andie Mathis) The club ended the 2007 year at our national rally in Nashville, TN, with 145 ralliers in attendance. There the Born Free factory debuted their newly designed 2008 model coaches with much fanfare. The rally included the Grand Old Opry and Riverboat shows, nightly entertainment, and one of the club's popular technical seminars. At this rally, club officers were elected/reelected as follows:

June 22-25 - Born Free Factory Homecoming (Host: Born Free) This event celebrating company president John Dodgen's 80th birthday was held on the factory grounds in Humboldt, IA.

July 20-August 28 - Alaska or Bust Caravan (Guide: Tracks to Adventure) George and Sue Boley acted as tailgunners on this 40-day adventure.

August 24-27 - NE Region Rally (Hosts: Bob and Winnie Markarian) The NE Region hosted a rally held during the Dutchess County Fair in Dutchess County, New York.

August 25-30 - SC Region Rally (Hosts: Bill and Mary Lyon) Held in San Juan, CO at the Ouray, CO KOA Campgrounds.

September 7-28 - Best of Michigan Caravan (Hosts: Howard and Barb Norlin) This caravan covered both the upper and lower peninsulas of the state.

September 13-17 - Washington State Eastern Cascade Rally (Hosts: Pat and Jack Herber) The NW Region held this rally at the Pine Village KOA Park near Leavenworth, WA.

October 11-15 - Balloon Fiesta Rally (Hosts: Gary and Loretta Richins) This rally was held on the Balloon Fiesta grounds in Albuquerque, NM.

The Sleap'n Lions Overnight Parking Host list was initiated in March.

In mid-August, the club's new website (www.bornfreervclub.org) went online with phase one, the discussion board, thanks to Mary Findlay and Mel Wilbur.

In September, Bill Hemme accepted the task of co-ordinating phase two which was up and running by early December 2005.

October 12-16 - First National Rally (Hosts: South Central Region) Ed and Judith Leswig organized this rally held in Branson, MO. Election of new club officers for years 2006 and 2007 took place with the following results:

In April, President Ron Johnson resigned due to health problems. Cathy Johnson also resigned as the club's Secretary/Treasurer.

In May, Howard Norlin volunteered to finish the term as acting President until June 2005. Mary Findlay became acting Secretary/Treasurer. Bill Lyon became the new Central Region VP.

In July, the Central Region was split into a new NC Region with Don Cannistraro serving as VP and a new SC Region with existing VP Bill Lyon serving that region.

In September, at the Central Region Rally, acting President Howard Norlin proposed that the club bylaws be changed to divide the club into six regions to replace the current three regions (Eastern, Central, and Western). This proposal was sent to the membership for vote with a voting deadline of November 5th and it passed. Also at this meeting, six Regional VP positions were established with members being appointed into these positions in an acting capacity. The appointees are listed below.

In November, Don Cannistraro resigned from the NC Region VP position due to health problems.

In June, new officers were elected for a two (2) year term at the Born Free Motorcoach Homecoming.

In October, at the Eastern Region Rally, Reggie Clay suggested we have a name for our Born Free FMCA Chapter. He suggested the Leap'n Lions and everyone in attendance liked the name and voted to have Paul and Doris Wolf contact Ron Johnson. There was an on-line vote, which passed, to adopt the name as the Club name. The Club name was changed to the Born Free Leap'n Lions RV Club.

Doris Wolf suggested we get name badges showing a lion to reflect the name change. Jan Preston suggested the badge design and then drew up the badge outline which was approved.

The club's original internet web site was started by President Ron Johnson.

February 7-10 - Eastern Region Meeting (Hosts: Joe and Betty Kost) The meeting was held in Brooksville, FL at the FMCA S.E.A. Rally.

February 24-25 - Western Region Meeting (Host: Norman Kinzie) The meeting was held in Tucson, AZ at the Voyager Campground.

June 21-23 - Born Free Motorcoach Homecoming (Hosts: Born Free) The homecoming was held in Humboldt, IA to celebrate John Dodgen's 75th birthday.

August 21 - Western Region Rally (Hosts: Born Free) Held in Sisters, OR at the Mountain Shadows RV Park. A chapter meeting was called to order by President Ron Johnson.

October 18-21 - Eastern Region Rally (Hosts: Paul and Doris Wolf) The rally was held in College Park, MD.

August 18-20 (Hosts: ) The second meeting was held at the FMCA National Rally in Brunswick, ME.

The Born Free Club was formed by John N. Dodgen, President of BF Motorcoach, as an FMCA Chapter during the homecoming held July 23-25 in Humboldt, IA.

The Club started with 47 members and received a commemorative coffee pot from the FMCA.
